Ozone vs. Chlorine Dioxide for Odor Removal
When odor particles come into contact with our olfactory receptors, a chemical reaction takes place to alert our brains to the smell. Some odor control efforts only mask these particles beneath other scents, which is ineffective in the long term. Ozone and chlorine dioxide both tackle smells at their source by stealing electrons from odor particles in a process called oxidation. Oxidation chemically alters each odor particle so that it doesn’t trigger your olfactory receptors!
Although both ozone and chlorine dioxide odor removal treatments work by changing the chemistry of odor particles through oxidation, their similarities end there. Many leading odor removal companies rely on ozone to eliminate odor-causing compounds. At NonScents Pro in San Diego and Orange County, we prefer to use chlorine dioxide for several reasons. Chlorine dioxide is more effective, works faster, and is far less harmful to both humans and the environment. Let’s break down why:
What is Ozone?
You may remember learning about the ozone layer in school. This layer of our atmosphere contains trace amounts of ozone gas, which protects the earth by absorbing much of the UV radiation emitted by the sun. In high concentrations, however, ozone gas is very toxic to humans.
The oxygen in the air we breathe is made of two oxygen atoms bonded together; ozone is made of three. This small difference actually makes a huge difference — unlike the oxygen gas that our bodies need to function, ozone gas is toxic, colorless, and highly reactive.
Ozone gas is:
- A known carcinogen
- Extremely caustic (corrosive to organic material)
- Irritating to the respiratory system
- Damaging to surfaces and materials if left to sit for long enough
- Considered to be harmful to both public health and the environment
In fact, ozone is considered to be so toxic to humans and the environment, it’s actually illegal to ship ozone generating machines into the state of California. Ozone machines are the primary tool for ozone odor removal treatments, so our friends in San Diego will be pleased to have NonScents Pro’s chlorine dioxide treatments as an alternative!
On top of all this, ozone generators can only be used in sealed, unoccupied spaces; the odor removal process can take up to three days with ozone treatments; and the smell of ozone lingers.
Chlorine dioxide is far safer, more pleasant, and more effective.
What is Chlorine Dioxide?
Like ozone, chlorine dioxide is also a gas, but while ozone is made of three oxygen atoms, chlorine dioxide is made of two oxygen atoms and a chlorine atom. It is yellow-green in color, and smells a bit like chlorine bleach, although it comes with none of the harmful by-products of bleach. In fact, even though it has powerful oxidizing properties that will stop odor particles in their tracks and result in cleaner indoor air quality, chlorine dioxide is a naturally dissipating solution that breaks down into salt water.
Why choose chlorine dioxide?
- Registered by the EPA as an approved deodorizer and disinfectant
- Naturally breaks down into salt and water
- Environmentally friendly
- Safe to use on hard surfaces and colorfast fabrics
- Improves indoor air quality by eliminating airborne pathogens like mold spores and pollen
- Complete odor removal treatments in 8 to 12 hours
- Chlorine dioxide gas particles are two times smaller than ozone particles, meaning they can penetrate further to eliminate odor at the source
Ozone vs Chlorine Dioxide for Odor Removal
Ozone | Chlorine Dioxide
Odor Removal Timeline | Up to 3 days | 8 to 12 hours |
Safety | Caustic, carcinogenic, and a respiratory irritant |
Post-treatment is safe for humans. During the deodorization process protection is recommended. |
Environmental Impact | Not environmentally friendly | Environmentally friendly |
What’s the EPA Say? |
Considered harmful to public health and the environment | EPA-approved as a deodorizer and disinfectant |
Potential for Material Damage | Left long enough, can cause surfaces and materials to deteriorate | Safe on hard surfaces and colorful fabrics |
Effect on Air Quality | Works to eliminate not only odor particles, but also airborne pathogens and improve indoor air quality
By-Products | Potential to react with other materials and create harmful airborne by-products. | Naturally breaks down into salt and water |
